Scientists have found a new lake on the domes of the Shiveluch volcano in Kamchatka

During field work, scientists discovered a floating lake on Kamchatka’s Shiveluch volcano, the press service of the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology reported Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

“On April 10, 2025, on the extrusive domes of the Shiveluch volcano, the participants of the route group discovered an oval—shaped floating lake in the northern part of the studied structure,” the report says.

The scientists added that the lake measures about 70 m from north to south and 50 m from west to east. At the sides of the lake, the water temperature reaches 52 degrees, and in the central part of the lake there is a bubbling boiler with a diameter of up to 3 m, the height of emissions is about 40 cm. The scientists also found a blue film on the surface of the water, which could be caused by sulfur and its derivatives.

The Shiveluch volcano was formed about 60-70 thousand years ago. It is located in Kamchatka within the Vostochny Ridge mountain system and is the northernmost active volcano on the peninsula. The last time Shiveluch erupted was in November 2024.
