In 2025, Kamchatka will begin the cleanup of Lake Kultuchnoye – the central water body of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. Funds for the work have been allocated from the federal budget under the Ecological Well-Being national project. The project has passed all necessary expert reviews and is designed as part of a large-scale improvement of adjacent territories outlined in the city development master plan.
Specialists opted against using heavy machinery on the shores to avoid damaging the park zone and to accommodate the dense urban development. Instead, bottom soil will be pumped through a slurry pipeline to an exhausted quarry on Petrovskaya Hill. There, the extracted sediments will undergo a natural settling process, after which the filtered water will return to the lake through a closed conduit.
Simultaneously, authorities are addressing the issue of direct pollution in the water body. Throughout 2024, municipal services detected and eliminated illegal domestic sewage connections to the storm drain system. To prevent untreated water from entering the lake in the future, engineers have designed local treatment facilities. The construction of these infrastructure upgrades will halt the accumulation of bottom sediment and initiate the restoration of the ecosystem.
