Okhotsk Region-2025: catch exceeded 574 thousand tons

Far Eastern fishermen have extracted 574.2 thousand tons of pollock. Of these, more than 423 thousand tons are in the Sea of Okhotsk. 80 vessels were fishing. This is reported by the Federal Agency for Fisheries.

According to forecasts of the Pacific branch of VNIRO (TINRO), the fishing situation will improve in the West Kamchatka subzone. In the Kamchatka-Kuril subzone, in the next week or two, there will be an active migration of pre–spawning pollock to the shelf, to depths of 70-150 meters, where spawning grounds are located. This will lead to the fact that most of the accumulations will become inaccessible to mining vessels.

The situation in the North Okhotsk subzone is also expected to improve. However, here, rapid movements of the ice edge, as well as weather conditions in general, can have a negative impact on the effectiveness of fishing (especially in the medium-tonnage fleet).

In the West Bering Sea area, pollock fishing was closed until June 1. The catch for the winter period (January-February) amounted to 31.5 thousand tons.

Positive dynamics remains in the Pacific herring fishery – 133.5 thousand tons have been mastered. There were 10 vessels on the fishing line.

The fleet continued to operate in the water area northwest of the polygon on mixed pollock and herring clusters.

TINRO estimates that in the coming period, the effectiveness of herring fishing in the North Okhotsk subzone will remain low or continue to decline, as most fishing vessels are close to their limits. They will be forced to switch to pollock fishing, because, unlike herring, the development of pollock farming is significantly lagging behind the pace of previous years.
