Yelizovsky Zoo to be closed in Kamchatka

Starting from Monday, the main zoo of the peninsula will temporarily stop accepting visitors, the administration of the Yelizovsky district told the KAMCHATKA-INFORM agency.

Yelizovsky Zoo named after Anatoly Shevlyagin will be closed for general cleaning from April 21 to April 25. After the work is completed, the doors for the guests will open again, and from April 26, the municipal facility will operate as usual.

The foundation for the organization of the regional zoo in the city of Yelizovo was the zoo corner, created on April 24, 1983 by Anatoly Shevlyagin. His first pets were mostly birds, then the collection was expanded with other groups of animals – they were exchanged with other zoos in the country or as a gift from private owners. Some species of commercial animals came from Kamchatka hunters.

Currently, the zoo’s collection contains 160 species of animals. Among the Red books, in particular, are the Siamese crocodile, the Greek turtle, the white-tailed eagle, the dry-nosed goose, the Aleutian kazarka, the parrot of Princess Alexandra.

Residents and visitors of Kamchatka can visit the only zoo in the region, located in Yelizovo, on Lenin Street, 20a, daily (except Mondays) from 10:00 to 18:00.
