Autumn Reindeer Census Commences on Bering Island

Annual autumn reindeer surveys have commenced on Bering Island. These traditional studies take place in the northern part of the island, where the animals migrate from the south to survive the winter. The majority of the population gathers in this region, making population counts in the north both easier and more efficient than in the mountainous southern terrain.

The reindeer migration began early this year, with the first small groups of males moving from south to north as early as October. Currently, the reindeer population on Bering Island – located within the Commander Islands nature reserve – is estimated at approximately 3,000 individuals. Scientists are closely monitoring the impact of the reindeer on the unique plant communities of the island.

Based on the findings of these surveys, wildlife specialists will issue recommendations regarding permissible hunting volumes.
