Security personnel at the Kronotsky Nature Reserve have completed a two-day drone piloting course led by unmanned aerial vehicle instructor Nikolai Yurov from the Voin Center. Both the theoretical and practical phases of the training took place at the Ozerny ranger station within the South Kamchatka Sanctuary. The educational initiative was organized under a broader conservation project – Ozernaya Sockeye Salmon for Me, for You, for Us – which is implemented with financial support from the Presidential Nature Fund.
Airspace patrols across the South Kamchatka Sanctuary, as well as the Kronotsky and Koryak nature reserves, currently rely on a combination of manned helicopter flights and unmanned aerial vehicles. Quadcopters log approximately 100 hours of flight time each year to systematically survey these protected territories and monitor for potential environmental violations and trespassers.
Integrating advanced drone technology into daily operations is essential for modernizing conservation strategies. Equipping reserve personnel with comprehensive piloting skills directly increases the efficiency of environmental protection efforts, significantly reduces operational costs, and ensures a higher level of safety for field staff navigating remote landscapes.
