There’s enough red fish for everyone: Rosrybolovstvo gave a forecast for Putin in 2025

A salmon farm has been successfully launched in the Far East, which promises to provide Russians with enough red fish and caviar. This became known following a meeting of the Lososeva Putin headquarters in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, chaired by Ilya Shestakov, head of the Federal Agency for Fisheries (FAR). The meeting was attended by representatives of government, science and the fishing industry of the Far Eastern regions.

By the beginning of June, the catch of Pacific salmon exceeded 14.2 thousand tons, which is 57% more than in the same period of the previous odd-numbered year. Particularly high catches are recorded in the Primorsky and Khabarovsk Territories, where experts have already had to adjust forecasts upward twice. Despite the fact that the harvest is only gaining momentum, scientific forecasts for 2025 look optimistic: the expected volume of catch is about 312 thousand tons. The Kamchatka Territory, which will account for about 200 thousand tons, will play a key role in this. Pink salmon will become the main commercial species, its share in catches in the Far East will reach 60%, and in Kamchatka — 70%.

The head of the FAR Ilya Shestakov assured that the projected volume will be enough to meet domestic demand. He noted that although the harvest will not be record-breaking, it corresponds to the average, so a shortage of red fish and caviar on Russian shelves is not expected. Fish approaches to the coast, including Kamchatka, are monitored in real time by two scientific vessels, which makes it possible to quickly assess the situation.

Responding to concerns about the possible displacement of wild fish by aquaculture products, Ilya Shestakov stressed that wild salmon will retain its importance in the diet of Russians. At the same time, he added that the red fish grown in Russia, produced in cold waters, is a high-quality and safe product, and the agency carefully controls the feed used by fish farmers.

The Governor of the Kamchatka Territory, Vladimir Solodov, in turn, announced comprehensive measures to preserve wild salmon populations. The fight against poaching has been intensified in the region, using both traditional methods, such as the interdepartmental post in Sokochy, and modern technologies, including drones. The authorities are also working on legislative initiatives to expand opportunities in this area.

One of the key social initiatives discussed at the meeting was the proposal to equate the old-timers of the Koryak district with the indigenous peoples of the North in the right to fish. According to Vladimir Solodov, this will eliminate the injustice when residents of the same remote villages have different rights to access biological resources. Ilya Shestakov fully supported this initiative, noting that similar requests are being received from other regions, and such inequality should be eliminated at the legislative level.

During the meeting, the issue of recent failures in the Mercury electronic veterinary certification system was also raised. The head of Rosrybolovstvo acknowledged that the incident had created certain difficulties, but due to the fact that the operation was in its early stages, a critical impact on the fishery was avoided. He expressed the hope that the Rosselkhoznadzor would take the necessary measures to protect the system from similar failures in the future.

Special attention was paid to the development of the fishing infrastructure. Kamchatka is one of the country’s leaders in fleet renewal. New vessels, including those built at local shipyards, show efficiency in the field, which is on average 30% higher than that of old equipment. For example, the Lenin collective farm built six small vessels in Kamchatka. There is a ship repair cluster in the region, the development of which the governor reported to President Vladimir Putin. The next step will be the construction of a dry dock, and support measures for this project are already being discussed with the Ministry of Industry and Trade. This indicates not only the development of fishing, but also the growth of related industries in the region.
