60 bags of garbage were collected by local residents during a clean-up on Ozernovsky Keys in Ust-Bolsheretsky district, Kamchatka.Today reports, citing a message from the Kronotsky Nature Reserve, whose staff initiated an environmental campaign.

“28 people took part in the clean-up, which was held to the sounds of glass bottles, scrap metal and the crunch of plastic disposable tableware collected in the vicinity of one of the favorite vacation spots of residents and guests of south Kamchatka. Many of them are children who love the nature of their small homeland and learn to preserve it in various ways: from leading an eco–friendly lifestyle and observing animals to cleaning up natural areas,” the message says.

Ozernovsky hot springs, located on the left bank of the Ozernaya River, is one of the favorite vacation spots of residents of the villages of the so–called Ozernovsky bush (Ozernovsky village, Pauzhetka village. Zaporizhia village, Shumny village), seasonal workers who come to salmon fishing and processing at local factories, tourists. Previously, there was a balneological hospital in this place.

“Every year, residents of our villages, children and their parents, go to the keys to restore order here. It pains us to see how some vacationers relate to what nature gives them. Thermal springs, beautiful mountains all around. But there will always be those who will leave their mark here in the form of garbage,” said Ekaterina Kostenko, an environmental education specialist at the reserve.

“We are very grateful to the locals for their caring, responsiveness and love for the nature of their native land. Many thanks to the parents who raised such wonderful children who sincerely care about the environment,” said Vladimir Khalmanov, Deputy Director for the development of the reserve.
